DDJ-FLX4 controls explained

The DDJ-FLX4 is two decks with a mixer in the middle. The decks play your tracks; the mixer decides what the room hears and what you hear in your headphones.

The decks

PLAY starts and pauses the track. CUE jumps back to the cue point when paused, and plays from it for as long as you hold it.

The jog wheel moves through the track. Touching the top and turning scrubs or scratches; turning the outer edge nudges a playing track a little faster or slower, which is how you line up beats.

The TEMPO fader sets the playback speed. It's how you match one track's BPM to another's.

BEAT SYNC matches this deck's tempo and beat to the other deck in one press.

The eight performance pads do different jobs depending on the mode above them: HOT CUE, PAD FX, BEAT JUMP and SAMPLER.

The mixer

Each channel has a TRIM knob at the top, which sets how loud the track comes into the mixer. Use it to make two tracks equally loud before you blend.

Below it are the EQ knobs: HI, MID and LOW. LOW is the one you'll use most, to swap one bassline for another.

The CFX knob is a filter-style effect for each channel.

The channel faders set each deck's volume, and the CROSSFADER fades between the two.

Headphones

Each channel has a headphone CUE button. Press it to hear that deck in your headphones, whether or not the room can.

The headphone MIX knob blends between what you've cued and the master output, and the headphone LEVEL knob sets the volume.

Learn them by using them

No Sync Club starts with a five-minute tour of the controller in your browser: it lights up each control on your own FLX4 and asks you to move it, so you learn the layout with your hands, not a diagram.

Try it on your own decks
