How to beatmatch by ear

Waveforms and BPM readouts help, but a beatgrid can be wrong and a booth can be dark. Beatmatching by ear means you can tell from the sound alone whether two tracks are together, and which way to fix them.

Learn the sounds

Together: the two kicks thump as one, slightly fuller than either alone.

A little out: a flam, one kick then the other very close behind, like a gallop.

Drifting: the gap grows bar by bar. That's a tempo problem, not a nudge problem.

Which deck is ahead?

This is the hard part. Nudge the incoming deck forward a touch. If the flam gets tighter, it was behind; if it gets worse, it was ahead. Pull it back instead.

Fix the tempo the same way: if you keep having to push the track forward, it's too slow, so move the pitch fader up a little.

Practise in steps

Start with the numbers on screen, then cover them up. Matching by ear is a skill you build with repetition, not something you read once.

No Sync Club's beatmatching lessons do this for you: they start with the readout on, then hide it and give you only hotter or colder hints.
