Sync button or beatmatching by ear?

Sync is a tool, and so are your ears. Most working DJs use both. The question isn't whether sync is cheating; it's knowing what it does so you can tell when to use it.

What sync does

Press sync and the software matches the deck's tempo and lines its beats up with the other deck, using each track's beatgrid. It frees your attention for EQ, phrasing and track choice.

What sync can't fix

Sync is only as good as the beatgrid. A grid that's off by a fraction, a track with a live drummer, or a tempo change partway through, and sync will hold two tracks confidently out of time.

It also won't line up phrases for you. Starting the new track on the 1 of a bar is still your job.

Why learn by ear anyway

If you can hear when two tracks drift, you can catch sync when it's wrong, play on any gear in any booth, and mix records or tracks that were never analysed.

No Sync Club teaches beatmatching by ear first so you know what sync is doing, then you use it whenever it helps.
