Your first mix on the DDJ-FLX4

A bass-swap blend is the classic house and techno mix, and a good first one to learn. You bring the new track in under the old one, swap their basslines in a single move, then take the old track out.

The mix, step by step

  1. Beatmatch the new track in your headphones: tempo with the TEMPO fader, beats with the jog wheel, started on the 1.
  2. Turn the new channel's LOW all the way down. Two basslines at once turn to mud.
  3. On the 1 of a new phrase (bar 17, 33, 49 and so on), push the new channel's fader up slowly, over about eight bars.
  4. On the 1 of the next phrase, in one move, turn the old channel's LOW down and the new channel's LOW back to the middle.
  5. Bring the old channel's fader down over the next few bars.

Then put the old channel's LOW back in the middle and turn off the new channel's headphone CUE, ready for the next track.

Why phrases matter

Dance tracks are built in blocks of 8, 16 and 32 bars. Changes that land on the 1 of a phrase sound deliberate; the same move a bar early sounds like a mistake. Counting bars is a habit worth building from your first mix.

Practise it with feedback

No Sync Club's first stage ends with exactly this mix, on your own FLX4 and your own tracks, with the app checking your beatmatch as you go.
